Size and material - two crucial factors that can make a dog house a good dog house for your fur nose. The trade offers a huge selection; small, large, colorful, simple, even multi-storey dog houses and those with several rooms are available. Below you will find out what to look for in terms of size and material when buying a dog house.

The right size of the dog house

Of course, the dog house should be adapted to the dimensions of your four-legged friend. It mustn't be too small or too big. If it is too small, your dog may feel constricted because it cannot turn and stretch properly. In addition, the dog house might heat up too much in summer, causing your pet to sweat. On the other hand, you should not buy a dog house that is too big because your fur nose might feel lost in it. It would also be problematic that your dog could not heat the hut sufficiently with his body heat and could freeze. There are several formulas for the right size - one of them provides the following dimensions:

The dog house length should be around 1.2 to 1.5 times as long as your dog, a little longer than him. The height is at best 1.2 to 1.5 times the size of your dog. The width should be about once the length of the dog and the door opening should ideally be 0.8 times the height of your dog's shoulder. The length is from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, the size or height of the front paws to the crown.

Buy dog house: wood or plastic?

The two typical materials that dog houses are made of are wood and plastic. Both have advantages and disadvantages. When you buy a wooden dog house, you usually have to invest a little more money. Wood, such as solid wood or waterproof plywood, is convincing for this with excellent insulation properties, beautiful air conditioning, long service life, natural robustness and is aesthetically pleasing. Wood is also environmentally friendly and CO2 neutral. In addition to the higher price, disadvantages are not always good sound insulation and high maintenance costs.

Plastic dog houses are also durable and robust. One advantage over wood is the low maintenance effort. They are easy to clean and mostly less susceptible to weather damage than wood. In addition, they are usually cheaper. In terms of environmental friendliness, however, plastic smelters do not do as well. It is important that you ensure that the material is free of harmful substances. Another disadvantage: plastic dog houses are often less attractive than their wooden counterparts.
